You are currently browsing the category archive for the ‘AW February Blog Chain’ category.

Absolute Write is an excellent source of camaraderie (although, I don’t recommend SYW if you’ve got major issues with social phobia and insecurity–the rest is pretty good).

March is already roaring along, as though the two previous months were just a rumor of something which might have happened. So that means: it’s time for another Absolute Write blog chain!

Here are the specs:

‘Tis time for another blog chain. This month’s theme is Surprising Secondary Characters. Write about a secondary character that surprise you in some way. There is going to be two parts, so please read carefully.

Part one: Describe the character in your novel in 50 words or less.

Part two: Post a scene that shows why this character is special in in 100 words or less.

Now, a disclaimer: I’m taking these blog chain prompts as an opportunity to add meat to the bones of the story I plan to turn into a book NEXT YEAR. 2011 remains the year of the short story.

I’ve promised myself. I will behave.

But, it doesn’t hurt to stop–every now and then–to play with next year’s dreams.

So, here is PART I:

Mrs. Volkov has the looks, personality and temperament of the KGB’s Mary Poppins. She is sturdy, but not unattractive, with short grey hair, and grey eyes reminiscent of a thoughtful mother wolf.

And Part II:

A brief interview with Mrs. V:

Q: So, how did you find employment with Mr. O?

A: It was a long search, I’m picky. But, I found her.

Q: Her?

A: Sorry, him. I found him.

Q: What is your relationship with the boss like?

A: About the same as any relationship with Mr. O. That is to say, distant.

Q: What do you like about your job?

A: Lately, his niece. I think she add something to the house and she helps me. Is nice, since there is so much to do. Good worker. She is like daughter to me.

Q: Where, exactly, are you from?

A: A little bit of here, a little bit of there.

Q: No, really, I just want to know?

A: Don’t hang noodles on my ears. You know enough. *wags a finger* *laughs*

As always, please visit the other fine bloggers on the list to see what their secondary characters are up to…

Enjoy! I know I have!

The main focus of 2011, for me, is to write short fiction: short stories, novellas, twitfic, and flash. But, like any aspiring writer, I do have a few novel-length ideas outlined somewhere on the computer (in notebooks, scribbled on post-its—you get the idea).

So, I will take a break from short-story-land today, in honor if Absolute Write’s February Blog Chain, to describe one of my antagonists.

But, there’s a problem.

The person isn’t really an antagonist—not in the classical hero vs. villain sense.

I prefer, therefore, to think of this character as “a curious person whom my character wishes to better understand.”

We’ll call him, for the moment, Mr. O. B. Scure:

He is tall, slender. His face is fine with sharp edges and sad eyes. You might note, upon meeting, that he is androgynously handsome. His clothing: fitted jackets, silk shirts. And yet, you would not like to encounter him in the dark.  He is a mystery: speaking little, in a rich voice. Its gentle heat like the hearth of a large, forgotten manor.

Also, here is PART TWO of the challenge.
